D’Lynn Lehew and K-9 Roc, members of Search Dog Network, recently became a certified Human Remains detection team. They passed a NASAR (National Association for Search and Rescue) certification in Conroe in September of 2011 and a NAPWDA (North American Police Work Dog Association) certification in October of 2011. Most of Search Dog Network’s callouts are requests for Human Remains detection teams, so certified K-9 teams are needed. Congratulations to D’Lynn and Roc for passing these national certifications.

On December 11th eight members of Search Dog Network completed the National Association for Search & Rescue’s Managing the Lost Person Incident (MLPI) course. Search Dog Network hosted the class with the financial and logistical support of the American Kennel Club and the Brazos Valley Council of Governments. Other participants came from organizations based across the state including Brazos, Washington, Travis, Leon, and Denton counties.

The MLPI course is designed to prepare participants to manage search operations during a missing or lost person search. The course covered all aspects of search management including initial response, search tactics & theory, and demobilization. Over the course of two weekends, the participants conducted multiple tabletop exercises and reviewed case studies.

Texas summers mean a lot of heat. We train our dogs all through the summer to get them used to it. We get a majority of our call outs during the summer months so we always have to be ready. We take extra precautions during training such as bringing extra water, parking in the shade, resting the dogs more often and carrying large amounts of rubbing alcohol with us. Rubbing alcohol, when applied to a dog’s stomach and legs draws the heat away from the skin and can be extremely helpful if a dog is close to over heating.

We constantly monitor for heat exhaustion which can end the career of a working dog and heat stroke which can be fatal. Click here for information on how heat can affect humans as well.
